Kubb Rules and Set Sizes: Pitch Setup for Backyard Play

Kubb rules, pitch layout and tournament-size piece dimensions from the U.S. National Kubb Championship, plus what to compare when choosing a casual set.

Quick answer

The U.S. National Kubb Championship uses a 5-by-8-meter tournament pitch with 10 kubbs, 6 batons and a king; recreational pitch dimensions can vary. Its published tournament piece sizes are a useful comparison point because many retail sets use smaller pieces.

Kubb combines lawn space, throwing pieces and a deliberate end-game rule: the king is the last target. The U.S. National Kubb Championship rules give a clear tournament setup, while casual groups can use a smaller pitch.

Tournament pitch and pieces

Piece or measurement U.S. Championship standard
Pitch 5 m wide by 8 m long
King 8 to 9 cm square, 25 to 30 cm tall
Kubbs 10 pieces, 7 cm square by 15 cm tall
Batons 6 pieces, 4.4 cm diameter by 30 cm long
Marking stakes 4 corners and 2 center stakes

The rules place five kubbs on each baseline and the king in the center. The championship says recreational dimensions can vary, so measure your lawn and decide whether the tournament pitch fits before choosing between a standard-size and compact set.

How a turn works

Teams throw batons at the opponent’s kubbs. Knocked-down kubbs are thrown back into the other half as field kubbs, then raised where they land. The team must knock down field kubbs before attacking baseline kubbs. The king is attacked last; toppling it before the opponent’s kubbs are cleared loses the game under these rules.

Compare set dimensions, not the package label

The U.S. National Kubb Championship warns that many sets sold online or in stores have pieces smaller than its tournament sizes. Compare the king, kubb and baton dimensions in the product listing against the table, and check that the set includes the full piece count and boundary stakes. A smaller set can be easier to carry and use on a compact lawn, while a tournament-size set needs more space and storage.

Common questions

How big is a kubb pitch?

The U.S. National Kubb Championship tournament pitch is 5 meters wide by 8 meters long. The organization says recreational dimensions can vary.

How many kubbs and batons are in a set?

The tournament layout uses 10 kubbs, 6 batons, one king and six marking stakes.

How do you win kubb?

Knock down all kubbs on the opponent's half and baseline, then topple the king. Knocking over the king early loses the game under the U.S. Championship rules.

Are backyard kubb sets tournament size?

Not always. The U.S. Championship says many store sets have smaller pieces, so compare the product dimensions with its published tournament sizes.
